Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez, Indians outfielder Franmil Reyes, and Chicago Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop are three of many MLB players who have broken COVID-19 protocols during the 2021 spring training.
The trio left the Spring Training grounds and went into a public place where they dined indoors.
All three players came out to their team and told them they have broken Covid-19 violations at a team meeting.
Cleveland Indians manager Jon Francona told the USA Today that “those guys are young and it’s not normal to be cooped up. It doesn’t have to just be baseball. It’s everybody. It’s life. But these are the rules we’re playing under and the more we follow them, the better chance it gives us to be a complete baseball team. Because right now, we’ve lost a couple guys for two, three, four days. That doesn’t help.”
The first time Reyes broke the protocol was when he attended a Fourth of July event without a mask in 2020.
MLB players who break the COVID-19 protocol like Reyes and Strop should be put in quarantine away from any team activities so they can think of the harm they could have brought to their teammates, coaches and fans.
It is early to call off the pandemic and guidelines should still be followed like wearing a mask, no indoor dining, and no more than 10 people in gatherings.
If a player were to break a protocol that the league has put in place in order to keep players safe from COVID-19 they should be put in quarantine and be suspended from team activities during their quarantine. The Center for Disease Control recommends that a person should be quarantined for 10 to 14 days if they get the coronavirus.
