Associated Student Government (ASG) President Kateri Mouawad said the school board hopes to reopen Palomar College’s campus in the fall of 2021. However, she did not give any specific details in the public Zoom meeting on Feb. 23.
Taylor Bergeson, the Chairperson for the Inter-Club Council (ICC), suggested that Palomar should provide clubs with Zoom Premium so they can have more time on their calls. Currently, clubs use a free version of Zoom that allows the meetings to last for only 30 minutes. Bergeson is hoping to find funding for the ICC to provide this resource.
Vice President of Finance, Kyle Deven, agreed that clubs should receive Zoom Premium, but he was concerned about who was going to pay for it. Mouawad suggested seeing if the district will provide funding for the software, but no decision has been made on what would happen if the district did not approve their request.
The meeting also addressed the proposal to help Phi Theta Kappa provide scholarships for students who want to join. The honor society primarily focuses on social justice issues, leadership and academic challenge. The organization currently has an international membership fee of $100, but Phi Theta Kappa is open to anyone and does not require a membership to participate.
ASG senator, Karen Galaviz, discussed about finding a way for the ASG and Phi Theta Kappa to collaborate and reduce the cost for students who want the membership.
To provide funding to the honor society, the ASG would need to open funding to any club or organization, which could potentially be costly. One board member also raised the concern of how the money would be dispersed among recipients. The board did not come to a conclusion on this idea and will be discussing it in future meetings.
