Michelle Hauswirth, a second-semester art student, works in the gallery, explained that there are art shows all semester long, but that the student showcase is special because it only happens once a year.

“All of the professors will showcase their students’ work,” she added. Hauswirth created an interactive head sculpture out of crayon called “Draw With Me” where students can pick up the sculpture and use it to color.

Doug Durrant is an art professor who has been teaching and drawing water color since 1971. “This reflects not only the confidence of the art facility, but also the sincerity and skill level of the students,” he said when describing the art show.

“The departments always attract a top-level reputation in schools in San Diego and profession schools in Los Angeles. This work is tremendous and you can tell just by looking at it,” Durrant added.

Durrant added that The Boehm Gallery not only contributes to Palomar’s reputation, but it has also helped students advance their art career and develop their skills.

Alex Brown is an art student who created a self portrait called “Miss Monster Me.” She explained that the self portrait was an idol to her insecurities.

“This art program is amazing with a wonderful community. I finally feel like I belong somewhere.” said Brown, her voice filled with emotion.

Christina LaTorraca is an English major who has been doodling and drawing since preschool. She said her drawing represented different elements of nature coming together.

She described how the Palomar art program has helped her not only grow as an artist, but also relieve stress.

“It has been very stress relieving,” LaTorraca said. “I feel very calm, it puts me in a different place.”
