During their game on Thursday, March 2, the Comets played against San Diego City College.
Sophomore Kyle Carr pitched through the sixth inning allowing two hits and one run. In the third inning, the Comets bats came alive scoring four runs including a double by Sophomore Quincy Scott. In addition, Scott went 4-4 including a double in the first inning. After the third inning, the Comets never slowed down offensively, driving in five runs, including an inside the park home run by Sophomore Carter Hain extending the lead over the Knights to 11-1. The Comets continued racking up hits including a bases-clearing double by freshman Noah Lazuka in the fifth inning defeating the Knights 20-1.
Last week, Scott committed to UC Santa Barbara, allowing him to pursue his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball player.
“It felt amazing being accepted to a school that I’ve always liked,” said Scott. He also mentioned that he built a strong relationship with the coach while talking to him. He encourages his teammates that are wanting to follow in his footsteps by telling them, “although it’s going to be a long process, just keep doing what you’re doing.”
When Covid hit, Scott faced a lot of challenges trying to get recruited to a four year college. “ I felt like what I was doing wasn’t worth it anymore,” stated Scott. Through his challenges, he started playing travel ball for Baseball Performance Academy and the head coach motivated him to stay true to himself.
As mentioned earlier, Hain hit his first inside the park home run during the game on Thursday. “I was nervous rounding third but felt pretty good overall,” said Hain.
Throughout his career, Hain has been able to motivate himself to be successful, saying “I like to work hard and have played since I was a little kid while striving to be the best I could be every single day.”
Hain’s biggest challenge that he has faced has been “Baseball is a game of failure, so you will fail more times than you succeed.” During his challenges, he has surrounded himself with people that continue to support and motivate him to stay positive.
When speaking to the pitching coach Hayden Carter, he described the team saying, “I think the guys have had high expectations coming into this year so if you were to ask them they would say we might have been inconsistent and under performing but overall, we’ve been doing pretty good.”
Carter described the energy in the dugout during the game on Thursday by stating, “the guys were very fired up to play them again this year, and getting up on them early in the game was fun.”
After the game, the Comets got their tenth win of the season and are currently ranked number one in the Pacific Coast division with a 7-0 record. Heading into this weekend, the Comets will be playing double header against Southwestern College on Friday, March 24.
