SAN MARCOS — Palomar students celebrated the opening of the new Pride Center location, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the vital campus resource.
Palomar’s Pride Center, previously located in ST-17, first opened its doors in Jan. 2011, serving as a safe space for LGBTQ+ students. One of the key services it provides is access to health resources. In collaboration with Palomar’s Behavioral Health Counseling Services (BHCS), an on-site therapist is available for consultation.
Additionally, the Vista Community Clinic partners with the center to provide HIV and STI testing confidentially at no cost. Today, the Pride Center serves over 700 students.
The re-location from its office in ST-17 to SU-17, right next to the Student Union and Cariño Dream Village, gives the center a more prominent space at Palomar.
“Now that we are at the forefront of campus, I’m hoping that more students come into the Pride Center with this grand re-opening,” Palomar student Valentine said.
The ceremony welcomed all who attended, featuring prominent Palomar and guest speakers, the unveiling of a new logo and live music. The logo read “Pride Center” with a rainbow in the shape of a star.

Student Trustee Ariel Fridman said she hopes “students gain community, safety, comfort and the ability to succeed with the new location.”
Faculty Pride Center Coordinator Ben Mudgett echoed a similar sentiment.
“I hope students gain a sense of belonging, and they feel cared for,” Mudgett said.
After the ribbon cutting, refreshments and snacks were offered, and tours were given of the new building, allowing up to 5 students at a time. There was a special musical performance by Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles.
Palomar was awarded approximately $600,000 in grant funds meant to specifically serve LGBTQ+ students, according to Mudgett. These funds go directly towards providing the best resources for students, and contributed to the relocation of the Pride Center.
On April 30, the Pride Center will host a festival for its 16th birthday. The theme will be “Owning our Pride: Love, Power and Joy.”
The hours of operation for the new Pride Center are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
