While our job here at The Telescope is to report on all campus happenings, both good and bad, we like to shed light on groups and individuals who have proven exceptional prowess. These accomplishments are a source of immense pride and prestige for Palomar College and are worthy of public acknowledgment.
KKSM – Palomar College’s Radio station was named Best Community College Radio Station in the nation at the 2015 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Golden Microphone Awards in New York City. The following students from KKSM received finalist honors in this national competition in the following categories: Eric Rallos for Best On-Air Personality, Serena Reid for Best Program Director and Best Public Affairs Program, Brianna Harley for Best Liner, Lilly Lopez for Best Specialty Music Show and Zeb Navarro for Outstanding Adviser.
Media Studies Department – At the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Festival of Media Arts, Jennifer Fasulo won Best in the Festival in the Video/Broadcast Production category in the Student 2-Year/Small College Competition for the production of the segment of North County News, aired on April 22, 2014. For the Audio Division, Best Comedy/Drama, Kenneth Hladky won Third Place for his entry, Tales from Plunther Hills Valley.
Women’s Basketball – Finished with its most impressive season as one of the State Elite 8 with a 26-4 record. The team finished 13-1 in conference and beat the defending state champions in Ventura before losing to Mt. San Antonio College. Player Keisha Cox ranked 12th in all of California and Coach Leigh Marshall was honored by the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as Coach of the Year.
Accreditation – Palomar was congratulated by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for several achievements ranging from curriculum goals to library webpages to campus renovation.
Palomar Speech and Debate – Palomar College’s Speech and Debate Team placed third in the community college division at the National Parliamentary Debate Association Tournament in Kansas City in early April. They are headed to the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio on April 3.
