Jack Wiland, a long-time Palomar multi-sport athlete who had returned to coach at the school,
was honored last week at the Palomar Alumni golf tournament.
Wiland played for the Comets during his sophomore year, when he set a 20 year record in
baseball. He later moved on to the University of Iowa on a baseball scholarship, where
he earned a Masters degree in physical education.
After spending a season as a graduate assistant there, he returned to California and began
serving as an assistant football coach and a baseball pitching coach at Palomar College. He
also spent time as the head football coach at Fallbrook High School and as an assistant coach
at MiraCosta College.
While serving as the pitching instructor for the Comets baseball team, he coached Mark
Ringkamp, who established the best career win streak in the school’s history. Ringkamp won a total
of 23 consecutive games in the 1988/1989 season.
Wiland, who’s retired and lives in Desert Hot Springs, Calif. with his wife Patricia, still coaches
golf teams at Desert Springs High School.
