‘The Little Things:’ First Film in Theaters This Year

“The Little Things” is the first film this year that is releasing in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max.

The movie stars Denzel Washington as Deacon, a homicide detective now turned sheriff after a past incident demoted him. A new job brings him back to his old precinct in Los Angeles where he meets Detective Baxter (Rami Malek) who took over his old position.

They try to solve a string of teenage murders with only a thin lead on local repairman Albert Sparma, played by Jared Leto, who received a Golden Globe nomination for his role.

“The Little Things” feels like a classic murder mystery with enough twists to keep you at the edge of your seat. It is a bit reminiscent of other films under the same genre. “Se7ven” and “Insomnia” are a few that come to mind. Possibly because Hancock wrote this script 30 years ago for Steven Spielberg. Spielberg ended up not taking it which led to Hancock taking the project on himself.

“The Little Things” still stands on its own, and the constant comparison is unjust. With such a huge cast associated with it, expectations are extremely high. While I won’t be watching it over and over again, I will still remember and look back on the film fondly.

“The Little Things” is available on HBO Max until Feb. 28.
