SAN MARCOS — On Dec. 3, Palomar clubs came together for Winter Fest, an event hosted by the Associated Student Government (ASG). Gathered in the quad in front of the Student Union, clubs showcased themselves and connected with the campus community.
The Active Minds Club offered a variety of arts and crafts activities, including making ornaments and paper snowflakes. In a separate tent, the club also hosted Love on a Leash, an activity that allowed students to de-stress between classes by petting two therapy dogs.
Club President Mark Francis emphasized the role events like Winter Fest play in building and fostering community.
“All these events — Winter Fest, Halloween [Fest], or even Club Rush — help build up that social culture on campus,” Francis said.
Another group showcased was the Economics Club, which focuses on financial literacy and economic awareness. From teaching budgeting and saving skills to discussing recent economic topics, the club seeks to help educate members on all things money-related.
At their table, the club also engaged passersby with an activity that put a twist on the classic “pin the tail on the donkey” game; participants closed their eyes and attempted to pin a fake $100 bill onto Santa’s hand.
For the Economics Club, these events help provide visibility.
“Even if people don’t come up to us, they’ll see us more often and say, ‘Hey, maybe I do want to join it,’ or ‘Let me just search up their Instagram,'” said Jade Jordan, the club’s social media coordinator.
Students perused the tents, engaging with club members and picking up various stickers, snacks, and goodie bags. The Palomar Wildlife Club also had an assortment of nature-themed coloring sheets that students could take.
Winter Fest is among the events organized by ASG this semester aimed at engaging students and raising awareness about campus life.
“I really see a lot of outreach that actually happens at these events. People come up and show genuine interest. Hanging up posters has a certain effect, but when you actually have a table, it’s pretty beneficial,” said ASG Senator and Chess Club President Elijah Barnes.
These events also bring noticeable spirit to students on campus.
“I really love getting to know the community and the various different groups we have around here. I feel like it’s one of the best ways to get to know each other,” Palomar student Eden Rivera said.
